When it comes to purchasing a new microwave, there are a number of things you should consider before parting with your money. Most microwaves will last a good number of years before they need replacing, so ensuring you choose one that’s right for you is important. There are a number of features to consider when purchasing a microwave, so our microwave buying guide has been put together by our experts to help you understand which microwave will be best for you.
First up is our features checklist. You should look out for all of these things when considering which microwave to go for. Most are included in all microwaves as standard, but it’s handy to have this list to check through.
Features Checklist

Timer
Most microwaves will have timers somewhere in the region of 30-60 minutes and this will suit most people’s needs. However, you will also be able to find microwaves with timers up to 90 minutes. Bear in mind how long you might need the timer to be on your microwave. Those with longer timers tend to be combi-microwave convection ovens.

Defrost Function
Again, the defrost function is expected in most modern microwaves. It’s a super useful tool if need to defrost meat in next to no time or if you forget to take meat out of the freezer in advance! Most microwaves will come with defrost functions built-in, but be sure to check when purchasing.
Pre-Set Functions
Pre-set functions make using a microwave even easier by automatically adjusting time and power for specific tasks, like reheating, defrosting, or cooking. Not all models include these features, but they’re perfect if you want to save time and avoid guesswork. They’re especially useful for busy households or anyone looking for consistent results with minimal effort. Look for pre-sets that match your needs, such as popcorn, beverages, or vegetables, for a hassle-free cooking experience.
Easy Cleaning
The ability to easily clean your microwave, inside and out, is also an important consideration point. Most microwaves can be easily cleaned by wiping down with a cloth and some kitchen cleaner spray. It’s also important to be able to easily clean the inside of the microwave too. You should look for a removable turntable which can be easily wiped. Removing the turntable will also make it much easier for you to wipe the inside of the microwave down.

Power Gauge
Having a power gauge on your microwave gives you more control over how well cooked your food is. Power in the microwave is measured in wattage, so the higher the wattage the faster your food will cook. However it’s not always suitable to use the highest power setting, as doing so could overcook your food on the outside but not heat it properly all the way through.

Size
Microwaves are measured by their internal capacity in litres. Most microwaves are somewhere between 15L and 30L. In terms of their dimensions, on average standard microwaves are around 40cm x 60cm x 50cm, height x width x depth.
If you’re short for space on your kitchen side, or your microwave will be put into a work unit, be sure to check the dimensions before purchasing.

Types of Microwave
Standard/Solo Microwave
Your standard microwave is one that will do a great job for you, no frills.
Standard solo microwaves are what you’ll probably find in most homes. They will mostly be fitted with a 30-60 minute timer, defrost function and have around a 20L capacity. They’re perfect if you’re wanting to use your microwave to heat, reheat food or defrost meats. Generally they’re great for households of 2-4 people.
Combi-microwave oven
Combi-microwaves are the ultimate multifunctional kitchen appliance. They will come with all the useful features you’d expect in a standard microwave, as well as the ability to use it as an oven and grill. That means you can use it to roast meat, bake cookies and cakes as well as heating and defrosting.
These are perfect if you’re after a microwave that can offer a lot when it comes to your home cooking. They're also ideal if you’re short on space in your kitchen, for example if you don’t need or have the space for a fitted oven.
Microwave & grill
Microwave grills will offer all standard microwave features such as easy heating, defrosting and a built-in timer as well as the ability to grill foods. That means you can heat food and get a delicious colour and crisp on your food. They’re great for grilling meats, pizza and much more. If you’re looking for a microwave that can offer a little more than just reheating and defrosting, be sure to take a look at microwave grills.
Household Size Recommendations
Large families
20-30L microwaves. Perhaps look at a combi-microwave as you will get plenty of room plus loads of useful features.
1-2 people
Standard 20L microwaves or even compact microwaves if you’re looking for something a little more space saving.
Small Kitchens
Naturally, for smaller kitchens, we would recommend a standard or compact microwave, 20L or less, to save space on your kitchen worktops. However, it’s also worth considering a large combi-microwave. These are generally larger, 30L in capacity, however because they double as a convection oven and grill, they can actually help save space. If your kitchen is too small for a fitted oven for example, a convection microwave oven might be the way to go! That way you get all the functionality of a microwave, oven and grill all in one compact appliance that can sit on your work surface.
